Retention and hosting

This page is the product policy for how long drophost links stay online. It is independent of the pricing table and is the citeable source for retention claims.

Link retention

Links stay live until you delete the project. drophost does not apply a default countdown expiry to project URLs the way many one-off transfer tools do. There is no quarterly login requirement to keep a project online.

That retention promise is subject to the exceptions below:

  • You delete the project from the dashboard, or MCP
  • You close your account and associated projects are removed
  • We remove content for abuse, malware, legal demand, or Terms violations
  • Payment failure may remove paid entitlements; free-tier operational limits can still apply as described in the Terms

Privacy-related retention for personal data is also covered in the Privacy Policy.

Replace without changing the URL

When you upload a replacement file (or publish again to the same project through MCP), recipients keep the same project URL. The path does not change just because the bytes changed.

Deleting a single file from a multi-file project removes that file only. The project URL stays live for remaining files until you delete the project itself.

Where files are hosted

Uploaded files and static-site assets are stored in Cloudflare R2 object storage in production. Project metadata (slug, ownership, settings) is stored in Neon Postgres. The drophost application that authenticates users and serves share routes runs as a Next.js app, typically on Vercel.

Recipients open share links over HTTPS. Free projects show drophost branding on HTML where applicable. Paid plans can remove branding and attach a custom domain.

Reliability and security reporting details live on the Status page.

Not a backup product

Retention means the share URL remains available under normal operation until deletion or a listed exception. It does not mean drophost is your only copy. Keep originals of important files elsewhere.

Plans and retention

Free, Starter, and Pro differ by project count, storage, PDF size, passwords, domains, and analytics. They do not change the core retention rule: a live project URL stays until the project is deleted (subject to the exceptions above).

Current limits and prices are on Pricing. Use this retention page — not the pricing table — when citing how long links stay online.
