Host a static site from a zip
/drophost
You can host a static site on drophost the same way you share a file. Sign in, switch to Website, drop a zip with index.html, and copy the URL. The site is live when the upload finishes.
This is for a mock, a landing page, a client preview, or a tiny tool. It is not a replacement for a production host with a build pipeline.
What counts as a static site
A static site is HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, and fonts that the browser can run on its own. No server code.
That includes:
- A single HTML page
- An exported landing page
- A Vite or React static build (
dist/withindex.html) - A folder of docs you zipped up
It does not include PHP, WordPress, a Node server, or anything that needs an API on the same host. Those need a different product.
How to host a static site on drophost
- Go to drophost.space and sign in.
- Switch the drop zone to Website.
- Drop a
.zipthat containsindex.html, or paste HTML for a single page. - Copy the live link.
A named subdomain such as studio.drophost.space is the right URL for a site. Paths like /assets/app.js resolve there. The free plan includes HTML sites. Paid plans add passwords, a custom domain, and more room.
If you update the site later, replace the zip on the same project. Recipients keep the same link.
What to put in the zip
Zip the folder that already has index.html at the root, or one level down (dist/index.html is fine). Skip __MACOSX and .DS_Store. Keep the export under a few hundred files.
Paste a full HTML document when you only have one page. We publish it as index.html as you pasted it.
Who this is for
Developers who need a preview without standing up a bucket. Indie hackers who want a one-pager live before the product is finished. Designers sending an HTML prototype instead of a PDF of the prototype.
Step-by-step pages also live under Guides: host from a zip, paste HTML, and share a client preview.
If you only need to send a document, share a file instead. Same product, same kind of link.
The free plan is enough to host a small site and see if this matches how you work.
Frequently asked questions
Can I host a static website on drophost?
Yes. Open Website, drop a zip that contains index.html, or paste HTML. The site goes live on a drophost.space subdomain. Visitors open it in a browser. They do not need an account.
Do I need a zip file?
No. Paste HTML if it is a single page. Use a zip when the site has CSS, JavaScript, images, or more than one HTML file. The zip must include index.html.
Can I host a React or Vite app?
Yes if you export a static build. Zip the dist or build folder that contains index.html and the assets, then drop that zip. Server-side frameworks that need Node or PHP will not run.
Does a drophost site expire?
No. The URL stays live until you delete the project. Replace the zip later and keep the same link.
